Hi - I was hoping that someone on this forum might be able to shed
some light on a problem that has come up in this amplifier, a few
times, since approx. 1965. I'm the original owner of this amp. It's
been used for a lot of gigs and has toured the US but has been well
maintained. For the past 30 years or so it has only done the
occasional gig.

Here's whats up. The amp, intermittently produces a staticy hiss that
is there at any volume. There is no change in the sound of the noise
if the volume or tone controls are moved. I can get rid of the noise
by hitting the top of the cabinet, on the left side (normal channel)
and can produce the noise (usually) in this manner as well. I've
swapped out preamp tubes and am reasonably satisfied that this is not
the issue. The amp was re-capped about 12 years ago. Other than this
noise the amp sounds as good as it ever did.

I expect to need to have the amp serviced and am looking for some info
in the likely event that it will behave properly
when I bring in in. Thanks in advance for the input. Vic

Hi Vic,

does the sound of the played amp change, when the hiss appears,
dissapears?

regards

Jochen

Hi Jochen - The sound/volume level of the amp is not effected by the
noise. The noise is independent of all of the amp's controls. Vic

Sounds like it could be a fatigued solder joint arcing at high voltage if
thumping it makes it come and go.

If none of the controls affect it, the fault must be in the final PA or
driver/phase splitter stages.
