So how do we keep the folks that you and I both agree are loonies at bay? Seriously.
We apply the law. Coy comments about "2nd Amendment remedies" probably don't deserve much action beyond condemnation because they are clearly gas-passing from idiots, although those idiots deserve to be publically excoriated and their party publically embarrassed into discouraging such stupidity in future. If they actually take it further and incite specific violence or engage in conspiracies to engage in violence then there are a host of laws to deal with that, including laws on sedition which remain on the books even if they haven't been used much in recent decades. In the face of solid evidence of violence inflicted or planned to be inflicted on public employees no defense lawyer is going to get his client off by claiming that the 2nd Amendment protects the right of a citizen to shoot a federal judge as part of a campaign to resist the "tyranny" of an elected govt. The space-cadets in the Hutaree group might get off for lack of evidence or plea down to lesser offenses and so on, but their lawyers aren't even going to try to claim they had a right to take up arms against a govt. they believed to be tyrannical, it's a non-starter.
The thing is, the Arizona shooting wasn't a consequence of statements of bozos like Angle, but it's not inconceivable that it COULD have been. Need I remind you that your initial post in the "Dem member of Congress shot" thread contained this:
"The politics of extremism, where the other side is demonized and accused of plotting to destroy the nation, bears fruit."
Turns out you were wrong in THIS instance, but I can easily see it happening. So do we just wait, and then REACT?
Personally, I like your idea in another post. Get the grownups to exert PRESSURE on the groups that FUND candidates. BIG pressure. First starting with the so-called "center-right" Republicans. Let them know that if they're not part of the solution, they're part of the problem.
Am I "unsympathetic"? In certain respects, yes, witnessing a lot of unnecessary carnage in the US that doesn't occur nearly as frequently in other civilized countries has a tendency to make me react that way, and if that upsets you, I apologize, I've said on numerous occasions that I accept the judgment of SCOTUS, and I just want to discuss ways we can go forward from that decision in an intelligent way.
Gun violence in the U.S. is a compound of many factors, guns alone are not the sole cause as I'm sure you know (see: Vermont) so I'm suspicious of one-dimensional solutions like more gun laws.
Yes, "more gun laws" by itself would be a one-dimensional solution. It's not the only thing I'd advocate, by a long shot.
Interesting thing with Vermont though, it's the exception, rather than the rule. One of the news shows I was watching the other night had an interesting comparison of the states with the highest PER CAPITA gun murder rates and the states with the most lax gun laws. BINGO. WINNER. The thing is, it's not a 100% correlation, so it's easy to pull Vermont out of the pile and say, "See?". Being from the Northeast myself, I would chalk it up to a greater civility exhibited by the region; all the New England states are pretty low on the per capita gun murder list.
