So enlighten me. How is modern medicine "bloody minded" today?

I use that phrase to mean it's overall a reductionist, treat-
the-patient-as-an-object discipline. This isn't a complaint;
we're better off for it. But medicine is like unto a war against
disease, and that biases our/their view of things. And since
employer-provided insurance means that somebody else
often pays for it....

I think one of the best treatments of this subject is James Burke's
"The Day The Universe Changed".

And I do mean modern medicine grew up in the French Revolution,
when the barber/surgeons took over from the Aristotlean physicians.
I believe that's referred to in "Connections", one of 'em as well.
