A similar sentiment runs here likewise. People complain when churches are
converted into mosques with the accusation that Muslims are replacing our
'Christian heritage' with their culture and religion. The fact that
churches are only converted when people stop going to them and the cost of
maintenance would be a burden to the taxpayer never seems to occur to
them.
There is also the issue that there has been a mosque in that NY neighborhood
for decades, so it's not like a new mosque would be something revolutionary.
Tyler is a longtime Gingrich aide who leads the group Renewing American
Leadership, which is currently raising money off of anti-mosque
sentiment.
The mission of the group is "to preserve America's Judeo-Christian
heritage
by defending and promoting the three pillars of American civilization:
freedom, faith and free markets."
Surely complaining about a mosque goes against the principle of freedom?
It also seems to me that the Founding Fathers did not explicitly state any
particular religion when drawing up the Constitution.
Many of the framers of the Constitution had seminary training and it is
probably fair to say the majority of them were religious (as were most
people at that that time). Yet they created a Constitution in which
religious elements are conspicuous by their absence--that should tell us
something, Yet many Americans today think what the nation really needs is to
be governed on Christian religious lines which is in sharp contrast to what
the founders of the nation actually put in the Constitution.
As for the free market, I think I'll spare you a long tirade against
consumerism.
I believe in free enterprise subject to appropriate regulation. Of course
some of the folks who say they're for free enterprise also think it's great
that oil companies get tax breaks, big agribusiness gets crop subsidies and
so on. Funny how it works out that way....
Mindless consumption is revolting, yet on the other hand I don't want some
bureaucrat telling me what I can or cannot buy. We generally keep things
until they're worn-out around here, we just got a new home-theatre receiver
because the old one had stopped working and was apparently unrepairable for
practical purposes. But we kept the old speakers and hooked up the same CD
and DVD players to the new hardware. Maybe that's why we don't have a
mortgage or auto loans or any other debts--we pay as we go as opposed to the
popular practice of using credit cards for every new gadget that hits the
market.
