I've got a perfect 6600:8 ohm PT and a few PT's to choose from and enough tubes on the bone pile. I've also got a stripped chassis from an Arkay FL-10, one of those horizontal things with controls in the front, tubes in the middle and a rear bar with the hifi plugs, etc. I think I've figured a way to put the board, trannies, and tubes in there. It should be a very tidy amp with the PCB eliminating a pile of wires. I'll have to build a case. This is a chance to use my router 8^\.
I just can't stay away. Soon, I think I will have to thin the heard. I have no place left to put them.
Can a 5E3 be built without the power tube, purely as a preamp?
I have a Super Champ XD, and there are mods for a line in
around on the Web, and I'm thinking I might wanna reuse
the power section to that. Might also use it sorta like a DI, too -
may even add a transformer balanced XLR out to the preamp.

Hi Les,
the sound of the 5E3 is a result of the interaction between the pre, the PI and the power amp. IMHO you will only get a fraction of the magic without power stage saturation and the asymetrical squashing in the PI.
If the power section of th XD is comparable and does not mind being hit with a hard signal (SS?) - it might work. 'The speaker plays an important role too.
