you're looking at the BR series get one with a HD. Well worth the
extra $$$. The USB connector on mine is only good for "total" backup.
I could be wrong but that's how I see it. I haven't figured out how
to take one song and d/l it straight to my computer. If anyone knows,
let me know. It gets expensive to print a copy to cd and then go to
the computer. I still haven't figured out how to backup "one" song,
and then bring it back with editing capabilities.
way to not only download songs but also individual tracks. I could do
that easily with the Fostex; you just connected the cable to the
recorder and the computer, and the Fostex showed up on the computer as
an external drive, you just copied files from it like you would with any
other drive.
I never had the need to move files *back* to the Fostex, so I'm not sure
if that would work.
The USB connection does allow me to look at the 1600's HD like a external
HD, but I have no idea of what I'm looking at other than Track 1,2 ,3 etc...
folders with files inside. I could experiment with it. The parameters setup
on the Boss OS are specific about what can be done. What I'd really like is
to be able to write the completed song track to the computer for publishing
but it doesn't allow that.
soundcard. Use any old 2 track soundfile recorder. That's
what I use to use with the cassette multitrackers.

because I want to hear the final result after ripping and--
conversion to mp3. A lot of times the rhythm tracks will fade into the mix
so I have to turn them up a notch on the 1600 to get a good result on the
mp3. It's annoying.

What would be sweet, and I'm sure at least some machines do it - is to
be able to import individual tracks into Garage Band for work, then
export the finished track as a track back into the recorder. I do
admire the capabilities of Garage Band - but you have to dedicate a
lot of time to working in it - and I'm using the family computer. I'm
not worried about drive space/memory - that's cheap. I just find that
I spend an awful lot of time on even simple tasks in GB, which means I
tie up the family box. So I went back to the tape machine, sold my
computer I/O gear, and have been happier since. Now I want a little
digital box. If it turns out I can get the recorder and the computer
to play well together, that's a bonus.

I wrote some software to extract tracks from a Fostex VF16 or VF160
FDMS3 format drive. It's only one way, but you can also send them back to the recorder with Lightpipe. This does mean you have to have IDE
on the computer, and you have to phsyically remove the drive. But for
transferring four hour gig 16 track projects it's a no-brainer.
The software is based on the FUSE driver for FDMS3 for LInux.
There's usually a few on Craigslist. But unless you're doing some weird
"remote studio" thing, it's not very useful sending them back.
