Nice story on the PBS News Hour tonight about Austin city limits, now in its
35th year making it the longest running music show on American TV. Damn
I've seen some great performances on that show over the years, what a
treasure it is. From giant stars like Johnny Cash (who was nervous before
his appearance because he knew ACL was a real music show and he wanted to
get it right) to then newcomers like Susan Tedeschi who I first heard of on
ACL way back when--ACL has presented a who's who of just about every form of
popular music. Talk about legendary guitarists--Danny Gatton, Chet Atkins,
Steve Winwood, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert Collins, Leo Kottke,
B.B. King, Doc Watson and on an on. And the stripped-down no-Hollywood
format means the musicians have to carry the show, there are no special
effects to fall back on, especially when the audience is just a few feet
away. Apparently they're moving to a larger more modern theatre next year,
I hope they don't lose the intimate feeling that helps make this show so
special.
Of course those of you who don't watch PBS for philosophical reasons don't
need to worry about this, you can go back to watching American Idol secure
in the knowledge that if it isn't on a commercial network it couldn't be any
good anyway.
You're not kidding that show is a treasure! Not only is the list of people who have appeared on
the show impressive--but the audio quality of the shows is always excellent! ACL and Soundstage
are two of the best live music programs on any network or satellite channel--hands down!
My opinion, anyway....
Mike
