Alright ladies, I'll settle this for you - and let it be the last word
on the subject. You will not find greater authority.
1. As to the meaning of niggardly, ALL of you are correct. You are
quibbling over usage, which does vary a bit, but not all that damned
much.
2. Wispy caught all of you with his play on 'mean' in which he
pretended to understand only the British (and older American) usage
where the word means 'stingy' or some close variation.
3. I fell for it too, and responded with a clarification.
4. Do not encourage Wispy's (already pronounced) cloacal proclivities.

That is all.

If you're going to make an appeal to authority, you'll have to explain
your qualifications.

1. I disagree; the meaning is clear at every online dictionary site (I
am speaking of the word niggardly not the LV nig-gard-li-ness
example).

The example was *not* for "niggardliness."

Take a look at the whole thing at this URL for clarification.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/niggardly

Pay attention to the list of synonyms down the left
side of the page. Figure it out.

No meaningful distinction - just a noun form signifying the condition.
Did I miss something on the page that changes it?

The synonym list refers to the main entry - "niggardly."

Therefore, niggardly = mean. The list I'm talking
about is in large type, vertically down the left
edge of the page, not within the dictionary entry,
although it's clear from the entry itself that the
synonymns are *not* for the noun form. Take
another look.
