There were some circuits designed by B.K.Butler that
used 12ax7's in what's known as 'starved plate', with
very low plate voltage. This would simplify things for
you. Starved plate circuits sometimes get a bad rap,
possibly because they're very sensitive to the type
of tube that's used. But Eric Johnson and other well
known guitarists use them. The sound is a bit different
from higher voltage circuits, but in this case it could
simplify things for you.
Those circuits are used in Chandler, Tube Works,
and in Butler's own line.

Do you make pedals? What would you charge for
a Butler Tube Driver clone? I see he wants $300+
I borrowed an Ibanez Tube King (TD clone) some
years ago, and liked it quite a bit.

I checked out the Ibanez Tube King when it came out. Almost bought
one, but I've already got too many pedals that I don't use.
Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to hand build one of those any
cheaper than Butler can. He's already set up with circuit boards and
enclosures. Your best bet may be searching for "Tube works" or "Blue
Tube" on Ebay. (Just checked...There are a few listed.)
The need for AC makes them less desirable for some, but despite the
low plate voltage, the filaments still need to be lit up. They would
drain batteries pretty fast. There are also rack mount versions from
Tube Works: Real Tube I and II. I don't remember which is which...one
is higher gain.
I had been mulling over the idea of using battery tubes with 1.4V directly
heated filament, the filament could be directly powered by a single D cell
which also supplies a blocking oscillator to generate the 90V or so for the
anode supply.
Years ago one of the hobby magazines published constructional plans for a
copy of a commercial electronic gas igniter, this used a blocking oscillator
with a transformer overwind to generate 250V - that charged a capacitor
which discharged into the primary of the HV pulse transformer via a gas
discharge surge arrestor.
As I already had one of the commercial igniters, I copied the BO circuit
with fewer turns on the overwind to make a 30V inverter to fit the battery
compartment of a large analogue multimeter (I still have it somewhere) as
the 30V high Ohms battery was no longer obtainable.
A couple of potential pitfalls have put me off going ahead, firstly keeping
the switching noise from the BO inverter out of the audio path and secondly
I have no idea how the voltage gradient along the directly heated filament
will affect the "tube sound".
