I've been posting for a good two months about a '73 basket case Twin
Reverb that I've been reviving. Except for installing the casters,
corners and handle, it's pretty much DONE.
I just wanted to say THANKS to the guys that fielded some of my questions,
including phone conversations with Rich Koerner. I haven't arranged the
~200 pics of the real work, but here's the obligatory "before and after"
of the front:

Here's the short list of some of the work:
Burnt screen resistors, filament balance resistors. It seems like half of
the rest drifted high above spec, so were replaced (I measured everything,
replaced what needed to be).
Shorted rectifier diodes.
Partially shorted choke with partial path to chassis, causing WEIRDNESS
like a seemingly microphonic standby switch, then I noticed all you had to
do was tap the area...
Rebuilt the filter cap section with Sprague Atom.
Replaced ALL capacitors (had mostly the brown turd coupling caps). Now
all 716P and silver mica. There are a couple of Xicon cathode caps only
because I thought Antique Electronics Supply shorted me on my order, but
later found some Atoms taped to the grill cloth in a separate box! I did
not feel the need to replace them.
I think this is were I posted that I managed to knock a dog statue off of
the shelf earlier when cranking. During a test drive after biasing the
Sylvania outputs, a Breyer horse statue and three more dogs fell down. So
I turned it down. And that was only on "4" (with my EMG equipped Strat).
It sounds GREAT with the reconed "swiss cheese" frame Oxfords and all
Sylvania tubes. I had planned RCA black plate outputs, but couldn't get a
quad tightly matched out of my stock of 12 or so tubes. I have tight
pairs, but no quads. So it's time to hit ebay again for used tubes.
Excellent work, Jim.
Looking forward to seeing the other 200 pics especially the inside
view.
BTW, was the amp under water or just abandoned in a garage
for a lengthy period before you picked it up?
BTW2, I did a restoration of a BFDR that was underwater in
Waveland MS during Katrina and took a few progress shots,
but the owner didn't want it looking like brand new. He even
wanted the original grillcloth to be installed on the replacement
baffle board. Since that was the case, I didn't remove all of the
rust on the chassis.
Pics of it are on myspace:

Even though I have it set so the public can
view my pics, the hosts of myspace define
the public as other myspace members. Sorry.
Hmm, just had an idea. Maybe I'll transfer
those same pics to my Flickr space.
That's right. I'll do that right after I send
this post out.
