Personally I think keeping the vintage, vintage... is a good thing.
However when it comes to Transformers they can be matched easier these
days than in the past. Differences in hysteresis make it such that
none can be duplicated exactly. The average Hysteresis trace is what
your after but keep in mind that over time all tranny's change their
hysteresis anyway. Its a combination of windings, quality of the
material of the winding wire, the laminates, iron purity or impurity.
The fact is no two hysteresis curves are the same even on the same
transformer. Its dynamic and cannot be reproduced. The iron will
have lost reluctance in areas and then increased in others causing
unique hysteresis curves specific to that iron = un matchable. This
does not necessarily mean its a good thing or a bad thing you could
have some frequency response loss in that iron if compared to its
original response you might have increased response.
Having said all that if was trying to keep a vintage sound I would
replace it or rewind it too. Why? Because its broken and how else
are you going to do it? If it was not a vintage sound I would buy
some cheap stuff that had the same input and output resistance
values.

Yeah, I really feel and hear the differences with the "Old gear" - the Differences you described in the iron, as well as "User Break In / or wear" - on amps, and vintage guitars are really unique by this point.
I mostly play a 59 Tele, theorugh the 57 Bassman, and both of these objects have been, Played, on the road, and traveled the world, SINCE the 50's
I've played other Tele's of the exact same vintage, and one other amp, of the same model / year / originality. and these were SUCH different instruments then mine, SO different, I could note more differences, then similarities.
So.. This new "Iron Journey" That i'm forced into :) will just continue to shape the amp in a more unique direction, and I'll continue to tour, and record it, but like the idea, again, even if it's just a Stamped serial # on the frame.... Keeping all of the original parts functioning.
For the record, Mercury Magnetics is rewinding the original Pwr Transformer for $300.00, and the Choke for $125.00
So, about $500.00 after tax and shipping, and hopefully I'll get another trouble free decade out of this amp.
