So why so few are posting today? At the alleged after-Christmas
"sales"?
Depends what you mean by good. As family and old friends have spread out
over the globe it gets tougher to get everyone together for Christmas, so
it's usually pretty quiet for us these days. Those huge dinners of days
past are long gone, the ones where you weren't sure if a 25lb turkey was
going to be big enough. We don't even cook much now, the local deli does an
awesome Christmas dinner with all the trimmings which saves a lot of
smashing around in the kitchen.
Got some nice presents, some DVDs and a gig bag for my acoustic bass (my
wife can take a hint) and some really nice shirts and some cool hi-tech
sawhorses with built-in bar clamps. I guess that last gift was her way of
hinting about remodeling the bedroom....
Of course half the fun is watching people flip out over what you bought for
them, that my wife was thrilled with the complete Sopranos box set is just
one more bit of evidence that she's a keeper. Of course I gave her lots of
girly stuff too, smelly French soaps and candles and so on; I may be dumb
but I ain't stupid.
Of course, it's also another occasion to be thankful for,
but I was miserable yesterday - sore joints, backache,
unenergetic and mostly uncomfortable. Weird, and
even getting sloshed didn't really help.
I had a bit of Makers Mark in my eggnog, and wine with dinner of course, but
getting sloshed doesn't have the appeal these days as when I wore a younger
man's clothes.
The food was good and everyone else was in a fair mood,
but this year, everyone in my immediate family decided
not to exchange gifts but make sure the kids got presents.
We all know who to thank for the wonderful economy, right?
We packed up and shipped as many gifts as we handed over in person this
year, like I said, people are all over the place now. Watching the kids'
faces light up is one of the best parts of Christmas, of course cleaning up
after them when they barf stuffing and cranberry sauce on the furniture is
one of the less pleasing features of the holiday. As to who to blame for
the economy, sure, some fellows named Carter and Reagan and Bush 41 and
Clinton and Bush 43 and hundreds and hundreds of Representives and Senators
who all did their bit to convince us we could live like sailors on shore
leave forever and ever and nobody would ever have to pay the bill.
However, things could be worse - could be jobless, homeless
or starving or in a war zone. Could have been stranded in
storm and not even reach destinations on time.
Yup, those little aches and pains are nothing in comparison to what millions
of people endure.
Guess we'll have to see if Obama keeps his promises even
though we also need to be part of the solution as well.
If the solution isn't embraced by the population it isn't going to work, the
government cannot save us from ourselves. So long as our way of life
depends on oil from countries where they don't like us very much we're never
going to get out of this mess.
