I have a '68 TR with the original speakers (Emminence, I think), newer
tubes, although I don't
know what brand. It seems to me the tone is harsh compared to other TR's
I've heard. Doesn't matter what guitar I run through it - Tele, Strat or
LP.
The non-reverb side is a little better, but still lacks "round" tone, for
lack of a better term.
I don't know much about amps other than how to plug 'em in. Could this be
a
function of bias, or some sort of tweaking a tech could perform?
Thanks for your suggestions.

You can start ripping stuff up, but first you might
try swapping preamp tubes around... leave the 12AT7s
in place and try swapping the 12AX7s in for your
'gain hole' (V2, second from right in rear, for the reverb
channel... V1 does the Normal channel). The particular
tube you have in the gain hole makes a big difference.
Your amp is probably the AC568
http://www.schematicheaven.com/fenderamps/twinreverb_ac568_schem.pdf
(look at the paper
sticker inside)... this amp has known issues with
the final cathode circuits. It doesn't take much to
make this amp back to AB763,
http://www.schematicheaven.com/fenderamps/twin_reverb_ab763_schem.pdf
should be less than
$100 plus minimum bench charge. They call it
'blackfacing', not the Al Jolson kind. Spend $20
on a decent gain hole pre tube and you're set, if
the final tubes are OK. You can also consider
going for a bias/balance circuit instead of your
current balance only... mods will help here also.
