Re: anyone else with this problem with Blackheart 5 watt head?

I have exactly the same "problem" as you.

Other than what you describe, it has no other problems.

The volume from zero to one is quirky, but after one it acts normally.

But my other tube amp, a Laney Lionheart, does exactly the same thing
with the volume knob. It sounds great otherwise.

So from my experience, "all" tube amps do that, don't they?????

After owning a blackheart head for about 3 weeks or so I noticed a
strange thing with the volume knob. I noticed it for the first time
shortly after boosting the input stage with a clean signal from a zoom
b2, although that may be a coincidence.
When the volume is on zero there is a significant amount of
guitar signal being sent out to the speaker (one 12" vintage 30 cab). I
would say it is equivalent of what you might expect if you had the
volume up to around the first notch or just below. The signal is clean
if you pluck one string, but distorted if you play a chord.
As you turn the volume knob up, the volume level actually
DECREASES, and the distortion becomes fartier (excuse the discription)
until it is lowest in volume at around notch one or just above. After
that the distortion and volume increase fairly quickly until at around
2and a half it sounds like a normal amp.
I've also noticed that I get a fair amount of noise and hum
starting at around notch 3 on the volume, I thought the dc filaments
were supposed to prevent that. Another old single-ended el84 amp I have
is also noticeably louder than my blackheart, and I find the blackheart
to be very bright, I have to keep the treble knob down around 9 o'clock.
I've heard others say they have to back off on the bass knob.

I seem to be getting mixed signals from everyone. I had it in
for service for five days, but they told me combo version they had in
the store did the same thing, and when the store called tech support at
loud technologies, they also had an amp that does the same thing, so
they didn't fix it.

I haven't noticed any mention of this problem on the
internet. So I'd appreciate it if other blackheart owners could let me
know if they do or don't have the same problem.
