Voltages are steady. Yes I put the tubes back in. No the tubes are not
good. Tapping the tube with the duller plate produces the snap noise
consistantly. The other one is Mr. Redplate, not as bad now, maybe
cleaning helped, but a new matched pair is called for here. 3-prong
cord, clip out the death cap, new filter caps should about do it. This
amp is otherwise bullet-proof.
Does this red plate condition follow the tube if you swap their
positions in the sockets? It should if the tube is the problem. I'd do
this quick check before I plugged in a new set.

Thanks Peter. I should have said "maybe cleaning and switching sockets
helped..." There is still a thin red streak down one side of the
plate, like a burn mark. I'm able to check out the rest of the amp
with these two old timers in there, but they are too feeble for UTA
