Hello again...I went to the training place and videoed the JCM some.
What I found out, using a $100 Harley Benton V with an EMG 85 installed, is that:
- there really is next to no difference in volume after '2' on master, just a little more bass. The '2' is the sweet point indeed.
- the 'normal channel' preamp doesn't really start overdriving before '5' but after six it's pretty well driven already, at 7 I'm calling it distorted.
Clearly the most significant sound changing adjustment on this amp is the master volume, and that basically has three settings: under 2 clean, at 2 driven, past 5, more bass. No matter where you set the EQ, preamp, whatever, it's gonna be basically the same after the master hits '2', all the adjustments just add varying amounts of more gain...like most Marshalls, this baby also has basically just one basic sound of varying overdrive amounts. Well the boost channel is different, very saturated in comparison.
Here's the vid....sorry the camcorder goes into clipping whenever the amp hits the 114dB which seems to be the maximum it puts out...so you won't hear how great it sounds in reality...but if you try to mentally remove that clipping sound, you get a picture I guess. Gotta make a better clip later on w/proper sound. This is rather big because I wanted you to be able to see the settings.

(youtube vid still processing...should be ready soon, find author 'deeaa' and j'cm800 normal channel testing' for it)

Hi Dee,
I took a look at your video...
Although it's been over a year ago that i had the last 2210 on the bench, i'm almost sure that the MV behaved differently than yours...
Ok...I took a short glance at the schematics...and according to them the MV should work exactly like it appears in your video - for the clean channel. The MV just shunts the clean signal to ground and does not act as a voltage divider like in the boost channel. Memory did not serve me right.
I'm not sure I'm following. This schematic shows a single post PI master: http://www.drtube.com/schematics/marshall/4210.gif Am I missing something?
If the above schematic applies, it's gotta be power tube distortion, right?
I think you have to live with it, but I'm also sure you can 8-;
Whether the power tubes, the PI or V4a distort? mmmh

Jim,
if the amp had the earlier scheme you are referring to, the behaviour of the MV "post 2" would be different; indeed it would be power tube or PI distortion. But then i'd suspect something wrong the MV....
The later scheme that i referred to, would IMHO most propably show the behaviour of Dees 2210.
regards
Jochen
