But do you need 4000 songs in your pocket?

I recently maxed-out my iPod at that number (it's an older 20gig model) and
was somewhat annoyed at the thought of having to delete existing music to
make room for new stuff. However having that much music on tap is very
cool, for example we take the iPod to our vacation house and hook it
straight up to the stereo there, saves having to haul dozens of CDs, ditto
with the car. And if you're in the mood for some Coltrane or some Dylan or
some Cream or whatever you don't have to wish you'd brought a few more CDs,
'cause they're all there in the iPod.

OK, I'll give ya that having your record collection in ya pocket is a
neat
thing, I also agree an iPod is NOT a 'home stereo'. My point was
that today's 'home stereo' sucks. Those BOSE things. OBSCENE $$ for
boom boxes with plastic 'wave' boxes.

I can't stand Bose, long on marketing, short on technology, and their use of
lawyers to try to silence Consumer Reports when they got a bad review was
full-on slimy in my books.

Back when I sold 'HiFi'
(Lafayette, Atlantis Sound) we all knew that
Bose 901's sucked. 8-10 4" speakers with some tricky Eq did NOT
reproduce very
well. ALL the kool folks loved the speakers from Japan, because they
were flat,
or JBL/ALtecs, for the same reason. JBL's were Pro Audio speakers in
home cabs.

I went through a lot of cool speakers back then, I had some Ohm Model Fs
that were amazing and guaranteed to make anyone who thought they knew about
hi-fi shut right up. I still have a 3A system I want to put back into
service, the one with the computerized subwoofer with accelerometers on the
drivers that allows the computer to track cone motion and correct for
errors, between that and the ribbon tweeters it sounded real sweet.

But my fav home stereo was 2 Sunn 2000s heads and 2 Coliseum PA cabs
with horn
lens.

Heh, I knew a guy back then who had A7s in his apartment, it's a miracle we
aren't all deaf.

I rigged a EQ set up on the speaker switcher so we could switch
'suck' into any speaker we were not earning a 'perk' off of. Cerwin
Vega gave us $5 cash per speaker sold, so you KNOW we pushed their
stuff. Altec $3 ea. Atlantis branded their own cartridges
and needles, but they were ADC or Pickering's under cover, and the
'wizard' of Atlantis (Ken Kanzler) paid us $5 for each one sold.
Guess which ones we pushed? Duh?

I knew enough guys in electronics retail not to fall for any of those gags,
plus I had enough clued-in electronics pros on tap to know which stuff
really worked and which was for sale to the guys who wore a lot of
polyester. A pal of mine ran a dealership and got all the latest high-end
gear, when he was bored with it I got to pick it up cheap. Damn, these days
it's hard to even find a real hi-fi shop. I figure it's another five or ten
years at least before hi-fi becomes real fashionable again, if the price of
gas keeps going up people are going to get used to staying home instead of
tearing all over the landscape every time they need amusement.
