Re: OK so here's what tubes I have...now what goes where?

Do you ever do your own thinking or researching or experiments, then keep
records of it?
Even at a risk of maybe feeding a troll...Yes, quite often. Sometimes it's
fun and helpful to think aloud loud, though. Helps pass the time waiting for
the amp as well. Instead of spending hours testing various tubes and such, I
find it helpful to create an idea of what might be best first...especially
since I can't test them myself before I get the actual amp. I suppose that's
what NG's are meant for - exchanging information as well as conversing
casually about matters of mutual interest.

Like from this thread I've gained a lot of information, about various tubes'
significances in amps, V1, V2 etc, phase inversion, differences in various
tube types and saved myself from futile efforts trying to make something
work, which never will. Lots of it may be 'academic' in nature, but
nevertheless very interesting to me. I'm always interested if someone has
some insight on what works best with what and why. The joy of learning is
much greater when you sort of reverse-engineer the info, googling up stuff
that people mention, rather than picking up a book and learning it the
boring way from A to Z. Besides, I doubt there is a book that tells you
about tube amps in depth as well as how to identify tubes and how might
their combinations sound.

Of course I already have some experience about how those tubes might work.
For instance, if I use a tube rectifier, I have an idea I might like those
mil-spec tubes better, because they don't do too much harmonies and might
keep the sound tighter. If I use the SS recto, it might work better with
those EH versions, because those are way more lively-sounding and warmer. I
don't want to lose all clarity and definition for chords@ volume. But,
ultimately, I'll have to test and see about it all.

Cheers,

Dee
