Re: OK so here's what tubes I have...now what goes where?

So what tubes into the 36W head? Choices...

Available power tubes :

10x matched Sovtek EL84-EH black (all ~50mA)

- The The black EH's are plenty, so that'd be my first choice for power
tubes.

But what's the difference between those labeled -EH and those not? ( I also
have a bunch of those)

8x Sovtek EL84-M

- These I'd also have spares for. I hear they are very long lasting, but is
the sound too cold?

4xPhilips EL84 (NOS)

- these look new but are used. Maybe spare them for studio use only? No
sense to use them in everyday use?

2x Haltron EL84 (used, old)

- look really well burned in. Dunno if there's any sense...might use these
for the Valve Jr. head, though, since there's just 2?

Preamp tubes:

1xECC83 Siemens (NOS)

- This is probably my input tube. Seems to be a mullard (seam on top) and
brand new(old).

1x 5751 G.E. (USA)

1x 5751 Sovtek

- Would it make sense to use one of these in 2 or 3 position in the amp? I
know they are lower gain, aka 12AY7, so I figure, is there a phase inverter
in the 36W? Which socket is the phase inverter, 2 or 3? The other one kept
as backup?

2x 12AX7 Electro-Harmonics

- Heard good stuff about these. So should I fill the last/2nd slot with one
of these, one for backup?

2xECC83 Marshall, 4x12AX7 Peavey, 4x12AX7-S JJ

- These I think I'll keep as backup tubes. All very similar to me, with JJ's
a tad darker and the brand-labeled ones a tad on saturated side.

1x12AX7-WA Sovtek, 1x12AX7-WB Sovtek

- these cheapos as backups only as well.?

So---I guess I'm asking whether to use the EL84-M or EL84-EH's for power AND

whether it'd be a good idea to try a 5751 in (which?) slot and use the EH
12ax for the last one?

Cheers,

Dee

Dee, is this for a Kustom amp? No matter. There's some good stuff on
the typs and makes of tubes here in the archives and on http://www.thetubestore.com
and other sites like it.
