but I got a bunch of old toobs anyhow, some used some NOS in theirDark doesn't mean used up. Sometimes tubes just look like that. Look for
packages.
There's a quartet of Philips EL84's that are used but look almost new,
and a pair of 'haltron' EL84's that look pretty well used, at least
they're dirty and the labels downright burned dark, and a few no-name
El84's.
the telltale Mullard seam across the top on both the Philips and the dirty
ones.
Then there's at least one Siemens ECC83/12ax7 (just says made in westThe Siemens should be a nice find....
germany I62#5C NF double triode)
besides that, NOS. There may be a
bunch of these in the warehouse, they promised they'd check and I canBe patient. If you tip your hand, they might get the idea that the old
get them if I want.
tubes have value.
BUT then there's a few odd ones, namely a bunch of these HUGE tubes IGo download Duncan's TDSLhttp://www.duncanamps.com/
paid little attention to,
This is a handy reference tool for tubes. I'm no genius. I just look them
up here. For more details bookmark this web pagehttp://tubes.mkdw.net/index.html
Some of those big old tubes might have value. List them on eBay? Who
knows, they might pay for your Ceriatone, or not!
but then some ECC85 and EF86 preamp tubesECC85 is a dual triode and appears to be a member of the 12A?7 family of
that look interesting.
I can't find any info I'd understand on these last two - there's like
4 of each type - but are those comparable/useable instead of 12ax7's
(at7's or something) or do they require different voltages?
tubes. It's spec is similar to a 12AT7. This tube draws more filament
current (.0435A) than your typical 12A?7 (.03A) Careful not to overtax your
power transformer..
The EF86 is a pentode sometimes used to drive the first gain stage. I think
you'll find these in Vox AC15/AC30. The "problem" with pentode input is
that it can be very noisy and it can be hard to find a tube that has low
microphonics.
I'd rather not appear too hungry and rob 'em outta all that glass, I
just go for what I need...might get suspicious otherwise :-)
So...those 85's and 86's _should_ work at least somehow in 12ax7
sockets? No fear of immediate meltdown?
Nonono
the EF86 can be of practical use in guit amp, but it's a pentode and not a dual triode. You have to wire the circuit appropriate to accomodate the tube .
Although the ECC85 is a twin triode and the tri-electrodes share the same scheme, the heater is operated in a different way..
Both tubes simply won't light up, so no practical use of the experiment...
Jochen
.
And there is indeed a seam over accross the top of the tubes. Good
news if that means mullards :-)
Cheers,
Dee
