the sounds you play immediately remind me of the "signature tone" of the JMP50/1987. A downscaled down version that allows power crunch would (IMHO) be the ticket. No, I've never played one. Or have I? Are those the 70's models - if they are I indeed love the driven sound but they are no good for much anything else - and I want to be able to use sensible volumes. Is it this?
Have you ever tried to jumper the channels on one of those amps?

At that time I thought the JMP-1 was better - and I still do. Not for the absolute sound but because it was so much more versatile. The JMP sounds better, but its speakers are much better too. Now I have greenbacks in my cab. The current Rockmaster I have beats both IMO.
What's the difference between the JTM45 and the JMP50?
I'm pretty much lost about these model names by now....there's a gray area there in between. Here's my understanding, please correct me if I'm wrong:
- 18W/36W. Round, crunchy cleans, driven maybe gets too mushy? I've never been able to play one really loud.
- JTM45. Still pretty round and nice cleans, but when driven, more punch and clarity retained? That would, in prínciple at least, sound like just the ticket for me.
- JMP series. Incredible ACDC sound but inherently quite loud and piercing (at least what I've tried I haven't been able to tame into providing a round and nice cleanish crunch - they have seemed one-trick ponies but incredibly good acdc crunch.
- JCM800. Needs lotsa volumes to work well, very rock, every one of these I've tried has screamed but hardly the most convenient amps. Hard to get a nice round clean at least with sensible volumes?
- JCM900. Very saturated.
- 6100 and some Jubilees - really nice tones there. 6100 seems very versatile too. Not available anywhere really.
-JCM2000. Extremely saturated, not for me.
-JMV seems like a great cross of all previous marshalls, but pricey and complicated?
Cheers,
Dee
Hi Dee,
short answer, 'cause I have to leave to work...
1987: EL34s, SS rectifier; bit different Power supply design throughout the whole amp, different slope of the tone controls; bright channel "sharper" then the older amps; sometimes a bit aggressive, more "solid" distortion than JTM45; "more modern" - 70s hard rock tone; not as smooth than your example; bridging channels blends in the "best of both worlds" edge from the bright channel; hump from normal
JTM45: KT66, tube rectifier; simpler power supply; a bit more "grainy", a bit "duller" or darker IMHO; a bit softer. Not as modern; Bridging still great, but not as versatile as the 1987.......
Both amps are capable of marvellous clean sounds, but crankin sounds so great, they are cranked most of the time...
regards
Jochen
