"Bush lied," is a lie.
When Hillary Clinton, Tony Blair, and countless others said there were
WMD's in Iraq, it was a mistake, not a lie. When Bush said it, it was
not a lie. Everyone knows this, but the chorus continues - "Bush lied,
kids died." Grow a brain, people. As if Bush and Bush alone were the
only one in world, other than Saddam, who knew his WMD's were largely a
sham.
There is a problem with this. Let me illustrate it this way -- if I say
I want to buy a new amp and ask for information about designs I should
look at, but I then read only reviews which praise a certain brand and
model, I listen only to people who like that same model, I make it clear
than I'm interested in hearing about that specific model and I actually
close the door on people who want to tell me something different and I
dismiss any negative information that reaches me about that model -- am
I really looking for info on what I might buy, or have I already decided
what I'm going to get and am just looking for justification for my
decision?
The Bush administration did exactly that, it became clear to the
intelligence community and the military that the U.S. was going into Iraq
and anybody with long-term career plans needed to get onboard with that.
Those who presented information the administration did not want to hear
were ignored, while those with information the admin liked the sound of
were given a blank check, even to the point where already discredited
sources like the infamous "Curveball" were treated as reliable despite
warnings from friendly intelligence agencies. U.S. intelligence had
their own concerns about Curveball, they had satellite imagery that
disagreed with his claims, their own investigators were warned he was
emotionally unstable and probably an alcoholic with a history as a
compulsive liar--yet there was Colin Powell addressing the UN and
repeating Curveball's claims as if they were proven fact.
So, if you repeat a lie that you should have known was a lie, if you go
out of your way to believe the lie and refuse to listen to anyone who
warns you it's a lie, maybe you haven't exactly lied yourself, not
strictly speaking, but you're still a damn fool. I can go with that,
Bush and his administration didn't lie about Iraqi WMDs, they were just a
bunch of damn fools who believed what they wanted to believe and
thousands of young Americans have paid for that little mistake with their
lives.
You raise an excellent point. It is true that all of us tend to seek out
information that is consonant with our views. Perhaps Bush considered
supporting info more than he considered contrary info. However, a couple
of important facts remain. First, Saddam himself was doing his best to
deceive the world re. WMD's. It appears that almost all of his closest
generals and advisors did not know he did not have have the weapons. It
would be tough for Bush or anyone else to know, when his own commanders
did not. Second, there was an overwhelming chorus from both sides of the
aisle and both sides of the pond that the weapons were there. Most
famously, Hillary herself stated forcefully that Saddam had them.
While it may well be true that Bush's intelligence services perceived that
he 'wanted' the WMD's to be there and sexed up their reports, you can
hardly label a guy dumb for believing the prevailing 'wisdom' of the day.
Thanks,
Ross
You still need to go to the PNAC website and read
in their own words how the invasion of Iraq had been planned
long before 9/11 whether Iraq had WMD or not.
Take notice of who signed that document and look around in
that site to find the strategy of needing another "Pearl Harbor"
to use as a justification for invading Iraq.
Remember too that every other week, Duhbya changed his tune
about why the US needed to invade Iraq. On one occasion he
even stated the US was going to invade whether Saddam
stayed or evacuated which obviously cancels out the belligerent
reason of invading to remove Saddam.
The whole thing was one big bogus deception.
