The tech idea is the right thing to do. That cap is possibly too big

Relax, dude...You guys are right. Opened it up and there are two diodes soldered
This is a really common mod. Four diodes (two, if the tech was a
noob)
were soldered onto the rectifier tube socket's terminals inside the
amp. It's easily reversible.
Lord Valve
Expert
from
one
rectifier tube socket post out to two. The amp is also running
6L6's...
My
plan is to have the diodes removed, install a stock tube rectifier and
install 6V6's. The only other "weird" thing is a big blue 100uF
450volt
capacitor that is soldered where a red wire is going through the
chassis
between the power transformer and the cap board (to the output
transformer?)
and what appears to be ground.
Amp is going to the Amp Tech saturday for a check up and restoration
to
stock with a possible cap job, some new tubes.
Two things; Any changes that I am missing that had to be made to run
the
6L6's (the output transformer appears original)? What the heck is that
big
blue cap doing there (noise filter?)?
Thanks!
depending on how it is wired in. The 6L6's are supposed to give more
headroom. And the term noise filter is in reference to line and rf
noise from lighting, radio stations, ect. A filter cap helps remove
unwanted ac from the rectifer output and smooth out the high voltage
dc for the amp. These big "filter caps" are charged at over 400 volts
and may retain that charge for some time after the amp is turned
off. This high voltage part of the amp can be responsible for shocking
a person to death. There is also hot 120 volts ac inside the amp unless
it is unplugged. The maxium filter cap size for an 5AR4 rectifier is
said to be 60 uf with 50 uf being used usually. The (100) cap is said
to increase bass response and if wired correctly is okay but if not is
too much. You might need to let the tech update the power cord to a 3
wire version (3 prong plug). The black wire should go through the
switches and fuse. It is possible to place an appropriate CY cap
across the white and black ac wires and from the white wire to the
chassis. And lets not forget the death cap removal. The CY cap from
white to ground (chassis) replaces that but will open if over amped
instead of shorting like the old death caps sometimes did, making the
whole chassis hot with wall plug power(ac). This had a real nasty
surprise for the user who touched a metal mic with his lip or touched
his strings and the amp at the same time like while pluggin in the
guitar cord to the amp. Nothing like getting the crap shock out of
yourself while onstage for a gig! OR dying in front of the
crowd....cheap is a cheap does!
Thanks for the info amp tech guys. And LV for the phone time. See,
I'm trying to use it! J.P.
I concur, Dr.
However, if this amp is to be professionally and not just for
bedroom playing or jamming, I would suggest that the power
supply resistors be replaced with at least 2 watt metal oxide
resistors of the same value for stabilitly and reliability.
BTW, *** LV. You don't have to kiss Wet Fart Willy's ass
in public unless you like your 15 minutes of fame as a pervert.
him for the help he gave me on the phone. And since you are not paying
my long distance or internet bills, it boils down to none of your
fucking business doesn't it peanut? Boils - peanut! LOL. Got your red

Couldn't tell the Wet Fart on the phone, "thank you"?
Since you had to announce your "thank you" here, you are a suckass
sycophant.
I'm sure you know where to put his smegma-coated tubes, too.
permission to post a quick approval for amp help on AGA.It didn't help
whi;e I was on the phone but later. I suppose since it was to LV -
that makes it off topic. As a sargent of arms Elmis, you ain't worth a
***! How about more amp topics? I need to learn some more stuff. How
about a discussion of getting more tone and volume from a Fender Champ
or other small, easy to understand amp? Not to destroy amps but just
for a simple easy to find schematics for example. Real stuff on one
small amp.All the tricks.Or the ideas for the tricks. Or the math. Or
the waveforms. Or whatever?
Just ask a specific question and if I know the answer I will
post about it. BTW, not *all* of my tricks are for the general
public or the toady cheapskates here.
to get it?
