Hey. I bought a Peavey VTM-120 guitar amp head recently. it looks like the
tubes are the same ones it came with in the 80s, cuz both the pre and power
tubes say peavey on them and both have silver tops.. How much of a
difference would changing the pre and power tubes make? I'm trying to get a
crunchy, heavy sound with mid-range bark. How much do new tubes really
effect the sound? For example, what pre (12ax7) and power tubes (6l6) should
i buy to get the sound I described above. The amp already sounds awesome
already, but i'm assuming i can achieve a better tone with new tubes. Any
suggestions on what pre and power tubes i should buy to enhance the sound
i'm already getting out of this guitar head?

Thanks,

I'd want to know what tubes are in there. Do you know the age of the
amp? If they are US tubes that still test strong and/or sound good, I
would NOT change them out just because they are old. But know that
Peavey silk screened tubes long after this amp was build. So tubes
could even be rather recent Chinese! I think Peavey used Sylvania 6L6GC
at one time.- Hide quoted text -

If they're original they're RCA 6Ls

Peavey used RCA's? I was fairly certain they used Sylvania 6L6GC/STR387
at some point.- Hide quoted text -

Mine came with tall bottle RCAs in it when I bought it new around
1990. Tried some Sylvanias at one time but the RCAs performed better.
Preamp tubes were the china's......sounded good in that design.
