However what does that have to do with Simmonds and Mayall still playing
their old hits just like everybody else, why is that a crime for some but
not for others? And does somebody need to point out that there was no
Bluesbreakers for a decade and a half until Mayall resurrected the name
apparently for commercial reasons (or as you put it, dug up a dead horse to
ride to the bank) or that Kim Simmonds uses the name Savoy Brown despite
being the only original member? Again, how come that sort of thing is so
bogus when others do it but okay when it's Mayall or Simmonds?
OK, but Kim Simmonds *is* Savoy Brown. The members who left never
were. The members of Foghat broke off, and did one solid album. The
longer they were away from Savoy Brown, the more banal they got.
You won't see anything like that out of Clapton. You'll see him doing
reunions, and making embarrising overproduced dreck with guys like JJ
Cale.
That might be, the last thing he did that I thought was up to speed was From
the Cradle and that was way back in '94. Interestingly enough one occasion
since when he stepped up to bat was for Mayall's 70th birthday bash when
Buddy Whittington's solos appeared to wake up Clapton and make him put his
back into it. That's why I have some hope for the Blind Faith thing, if
Winwood pushes Clapton it could get interesting because Clapton can still
play when he chooses to, but he needs someone to light a fire under his ass
first.
Clapton still does some very respectable stuff. And he plays with
some great young players. Like Derek Trucks, and Doyle Bramhall II.
He doesn't need to do the reunions. That's pledge week grade bullshit
if you ask me.
FWIW, as far as I can find, Clapton & Winwood are playing these gigs
bacause they had a whole bunch of fun playing together at the last
Crossroads Festival. I also was not able to find anywhere where
*they* were calling it a "Blind Faith reunion". That label seems
to have been stuck on it by the ever reliable music press and
assorted other commentators...

It might be cool, I'd go if they played in my little town and
I'm not the world's most rabid Clapton fan...
Are they supposed to stay home and tend the garden or whatever?
