Agreed, but you'll get a lot more bang for the buck these days with
Jimmy's
Chicken Shack than The Who. Hey, I'm a fan too, but I'd rather remember
them at their peak. With Entwistle and Moon. Roger and Pete may be
pretty
good for a couple of sixty-somethings, but in the end, that's what they
are.
The punk has met the godfather, and the punk has won.
Don't get me wrong, I can easily be talked into going down to some seedy
blues club to see guys who will never be asked to do the soundtrack for a
Nissan commercial. Like the man said, there are only two kinds of music,
good music and bad music, and the price tag doesn't determine which is
which.
I well recall the original Who from their glory days, and while nothing will
ever be that good again several of the best shows I've seen in the past
decade have been Who concerts. Frankly I couldn't be bothered in the years
when they were dragging around a huge backing crew and Townshend was making
snotty remarks about doing it because his bandmates were broke, however that
changed. Even at the reduced voltage they can generate today they're still
a hell of a band because Townshend wants to be onstage again and that made
all the difference.
I also don't get the remember them at their peak thing, that's like saying
you don't want to dance with your wife anymore because she has a few
wrinkles and isn't quite as nimble as she once was and you'd hate to spoil
the memory of your honeymoon. Time goes on, things change, music isn't
supposed to be a museum exhibit, it's about emotion, and if the band is
putting their heart into it and the audience is going nuts then you're a
damn fool not to be there IMHO. I'm glad Pete didn't take his checkbook and
crawl off to die, he's still a punk and seeing him throw a malfunctioning
guitar is still worth the price of admission.
