Check this out:

really cool-looking bronze window screen; it cost three times as much
as the ordinary steel stuff, but it was heavier gauge and it looked
like it would lay flatter and be easier to work with. I removed the
sheet metal piece from the top of the amp ...
... cut a piece of screen the same size. I stapled it in,
put the amp back together, and...holy SHIT, TONE CITY!!! Not only was
the nasty rattle gone, but all the notes now had much more definition.
Now, I'm not going to claim any magical electronic voodoo happened
because I removed a sheet of aluminum and replaced it with a piece of
bronze window screen...it's possible (barely) that there was a small
change in wiring-to-chassis capacitance induced by doing this...but it
just could be possible that all of those SF Fenders which have those
sheet-metal shield-plates installed in them produce a small, barely
perceptible mechanical buzz on lots (if not ALL) of the notes played
through the amp, which results in a general degradation of the amp's
tone. Since those shields are attached to the amp cases with
randomly-placed staples, all sorts of different vibrational nodes could
form on the sheet metal...making the problem worse in some, better in
others. Perhaps some of the players or techs on this NG who own SF
amps with sheet-aluminum shields could rip 'em out and replace them
with a piece of ordinary metal window screen...it'll cost less than a
buck, and it can be done in less than an hour. I'm REALLY curious to
see if anyone else notices the same startling improvement in clarity
that I did.

"Pear Cable, now with bronze screen shielding, for that beautiful
full-bodied fruity sound."
...possibly "there was a small change in wiring-to-chassis capacitance
induced by doing this"
OK!
"Since those shields are attached to the amp cases with
randomly-placed staples, all sorts of different vibrational nodes could
form on the sheet metal.."
Hence changing that wiring-to-chassis capacitance by random amounts,
depending on which staple segment vibrational nodes were being
actuated by a given frequency, and thereby resulting in a "startling
improvement in clarity." "HOLY SHIT, TONE CITY!"
