Re: Roy Buchanan's amps. ?----Sandoz

I've heard that Eddie VanHalen used to turn his back to the audience
when he was first doing his tapping thing. I suppose for the same
reason. No free lessons.----Ray----

Anyone know what amps Roy used ? I know he had a lot of guitars over
the years & that he was experimenting with some pedals before the end.
Just curious about his sound . Thanks for anything.-----Sandoz----

I knew Roy; did three weeks with his band when his regular organist had
pneumonia.

He was using a BF Pro Reverb then, but I saw him use
damn near every Fender combo you can think of over
the years - nearly always, they were turned speakers
toward the wall at about a thirty-degree angle. He sat
in with my band once at a club in Lexington Park, Md.
(across the street from the Pax River NAS) and he
sounded completely different through my guitarist's
Twin, which was up on a chair and pointed at the crowd.
Having the amp facing the wall was part of his schtick
back then (around 1970).

When I was a sprout, Roy would play Saturday afternoon
"all-ages" matinee shows at the Silver Dollar in Georgetown.

I went to more than a few of those. I remember a BF Vibrolux
Reverb and also that *he* would turn around and face the
wall when he saw someone in the audience that he knew was
a guitar player. Didn't want to give away free lessons...

I had a couple of friends *pay* Roy for lessons and whatever
it was that he taught them made them improve almost as
rapidly as if he was Beelzebub teaching at the Crossroads.
