that makes perfect sense.. i got the amp a few months ago and all the
tubes seemed to be stock, never changed. i cleaned the pots when i first
got it, and as i was making my way into the amp it was like a lint shower.
Until the tubes blew, I loved the sound they produced. Any suggestions
on what tubes I should buy (both 12ax7s and 6l6s)? I'm not sure how much
of a difference they make to the overall sound, but after tweaking the
settings on the amp, I achieved a black sabbath/alice in chains guitar
sound i'd like to keep.
thanks again for all the help,

The preamp tubes (12AX7s) are probably still good. You generally only
worry about them if 1) you get no or very weak sound with a good set of
6L6s or 2) you hear a lot of noise (hiss, crackles and howls) which
shouldn't be there.
On the other hand, mixing and matching preamp tubes can be a fun, if not
potentially expensive, pastime. Easy to do, no tech is needed and
different brands of preamp tubes do sound different...especially in the
#1 slot (the one closest to the input jack).
