I have less than zero interest in jumping into this thread...
But...
While it's still far from completely practical, hydrogen
looks pretty promising as an automotive fuel source. And Rich,
I know that you're a high performance car kind of guy, I have to
say the performance potential with hydrogen is pretty attractive.
I can't write much about it just now, but I'm working with a
race boat engine builder -- blown alcohol 1400+HP kind of stuff --
and we're making some progress.
IMO, the are two major problems. One is the proliferation, both past
and present, of *snake oil salesmen*. You know, the guys who swear
you can run your car on pure water and drive for free the rest of your
life. This is, at least currently, bunk. Largely because of the number
two problem (which, IMO, is really the ONE problem). Mr Faraday
discovered the laws of electrolysis, and those laws are a stumbling
block. So much current, using traditional electrolysis, is required
to produce enough hydrogen to, let's say, power a car, that the
alternator would never keep up.
Brown's Gas is pretty cool, and an effective *supplement* to fossil
fuel, but, as it is already a stoichiometric mixture, you could only
run a car on it if you first depleted the oxygen from the atmospheric
intake air. Got to have the nitrogen, but that *excess* oxygen is
really in the way...
All I'm saying is, it's worth the research and development. It is,
after all, renewable.

Yeah, it takes energy to harvest energy. That's the glitch.
What we really need is a none polluting high heat source. Boil some water, and we can move anything
on land.
For the sky birds, it's always going to be a liquid combustion fuel. Ya can't get away from that.
Not to mention cutting your lawn.
You can't get the same MPG from bio fuels as you can from petro fuels. That's a given.
You'll consume more, and pollute the about the same, over the same given distance.
There's no wining there.
