Hello,
Is it possible to run an all-tube amp with a power tube in place of
the Rectifier tube? i acquired an amp - Ampeg b25, which is supposed
to have an 5AR4 rectifier tube, 2 7027s power tubes and 7199 /12AX7a
pre-amp. the pre-amp section looks stock but apparently he just
shoved 4X Sovtek 5881WXT power tubes in the Rectifier slot, the 2
power tubes slots and the other slot just to the right of the power
tube. he claims that he was running it this way, but i am even afraid
to turn it on! if he ran it without a rectifier wouldnt it blow?
is it possible it was modded for this?
Yes, it is possible... if the extra socket hole is
populated, then it probably was modded.
The pairs of sockets are paralleled together
(for the most part) so it would be easy to tell...
also, you'd find a solid-state rectifier board
taking the place of the tube rec.
You bought it... and didn't have it demo'd
first? Not sure you're smart enough to open
the case on this one... : )
