You should buy the tubes from the tech also, because
they don't like losing the profit from the sale, and you
*definitely* want the tech to be your buddy.
It isn't out of the question for the tech to add his markup to the tubes
you bring in. He might not convey the pricing to you exactly this way,
but he might build it in. In other words, bias with tubes bought from me
$40. Bias with your tubes $60...or whatever. You get the idea.
Also, because he doesn't know where the tubes come from, he could take
issue with whether they are properly matched and you can't expect him to
take responsibiltiy. You leave your tubes with him. Later you get a call
that he can't find a decent spot to set idle because he doesn't like what
he sees on the meter. You still pay for the service and get an
unsatisfactory result. Buy your tubes from the person who sets the bias,
or at least get a clear understanding as to whether he is willing to work
with your tubes and what the conditions might be.
Besides that, the tech should pull the chassis and give it a quick once
over. It's just like that "safety inspection" you get when you take your
car in for service. He just might spot something that is due to be done
and you'll save a bit with proper preventive maintenance.
Cool , thanks for the advice dudes.
