The lead channel on mine is similar, very compressed with less dirt, more
like a mesa???It's voiced differently.
I think the gain is cranked because this channel with go into a total
overload
scenario if I use my wah with the boost on and the low input compensation
off.
Is yours an LM model? I like the sound of mine but there isn't enough
gain on the lead channel. It doesn't quite sound thick enough, with the
bass lacking definition. Things are much better around full volume but I
find I have to use a Tube Screamer to get closer to the sound I want. My
JCM900 SLX has a fuller sound from the preamp. I'm going to get it
serviced soon as I bought it s/h about a year ago. The previous owner
seems to have thought it had too much gain as there were a few old General
Electrics 'JAN' 5751s in the preamp section.
Yeah i have an LM. I always used it for the real low end heavy stuff on
channel 3. Its like they voiced the gnarly mids out of it to make it
cleaner.
But I still have these Chinese tubes all the way across the pre-amp and I
gotta
admit with the sovteks they seemed ok. But once I put the JJ's in there
these tubes don't seem to be all that great. A new pre-amp tube line up
is definatly gonna have to be tried.
So far, EH valves have sounded best but I've had a few that are
microphonic or caused other noises. The Tung Sol reissues sound quite
nice.
