Re: Fender Super Six / Distortion / troubleshooting

Hi Elvis,
Thanks for taking the time to respond this way. I guess I am in between
amateur and pro as I never did get any formal training in this stuff.

Well Greg, sorry for assuming you were an amateur, but if
someone has to ask for advice here, they usually are.
No insults were intended and no attempts at condescension.
You didn't explain why you did what you did, and perhaps if
you would have, I would have phrased my reply differently.

I could see why you think I'm an *** if you disagree with
me politically, but in technical posts, I was only trying to be
helpful while trying to understand what and why you did what
you did based on the limited amount of info in your post.

You see, troubleshooting involves not only finding the component(s)
that failed, but WHY they failed. Not to mention there is also
some bad information people come across and some folks
think of it as gospel. But based on your reply to Jochen, you seem
to know what you are doing, however you still need to address
the sockets and yes, the Output transformer could be defective.

Again, good luck.

Hi Elvis,
Were you always an arrogant *** or did you learn that?

Hello,
I have an old Fender Super Six in for restoration. It has been sitting
in
a
garage for 10+ years and is in bad shape.
I have replaced the power transformer, all tubes, all pots, and
checked
all
connections and resistors.

You found the power transformer defective? How?
And ALL of the tubes? Do you have a tube tester?
Were the tube American made? Why replace ALL of them?
Couldn't clean the pots as well as the sockets or were
the pots frozen?
BTW, you didn't say anything about the sockets.
Did you clean them or replace them too? With an
amp sitting in a garage for that amount of time,
sockets definitely need cleaning or replacing.

The fiberboard most likely needs cleaning too.

All voltages match the schematics within +/- 15%.

That's a good indication, but not all that conclusive.

There is hole though

A hole? Where?

and all treb, mid, bass, and volume controls are
working.

Good.

However.....the sound that comes out is AWFUL. It is really not that
loud
and it is super distorted. With the input volume really low there is
no
distortion. It is not the speaker and I am not using the Ext speaker
output.

I do not know how to check the capcitors or the transformers (well
execpt
for the power trans which is new).

Well, if you are going to replace parts indicriminately without testing
them, you could have replaced all of the electrolytic caps and that
would have been sufficient to start out with.

Are there any smart people out there that can help me?

You need proper test equipment, not smart people.

Good luck, but actually there are many people here who can help you.
However you should have sought advice before doing
some of that work. Some of it seems a bit unneccesary based on
the info you've provided. I hope you saved the tubes that were in there
if they were American made tubes - they may be still good and would
only need their pins cleaned.

Many thanks,
Greg
