Unfortunately, not all kids have the same level of maturity.

Yes and No. For the most part, that "lack of maturity" you refer to is because their parents haven't taught them any better. As gtski pointed out, if you don't teach kids the danger of running out into a street, that can be just as dangerous. Yet somehow all kids (mature or not) have this hammered in their head, and for the most part don't run out into the street (and when it does, it's considered a horrible, tragic accident). Same applies for guns.

But sure, there are some kids that just don't have that level of maturity, even with the proper teaching (those are the same kids that run into the street despite their parents protests). And for those kids, I agree...you should not have an unlocked gun in your house.

And the parents need to be SMART enough to know when the kids warrant no guns in the house. I have known families like this... the kids are just not 'getting it' and the parents sell the guns (or send them to relatives) so that no accident will happen in their home(s).

My parents where MORE worried about OTHER homes. They knew that other families had guns in their homes and may not teach/practice gun safety. As a kid, I was taught the 'warning signs' and knew to leave and come home if I was somewhere where gun safety was lax.
