the reviews painted the picture that L6 was one of the bettermanufacturers, which it sounds from you guys is NOT the case.
I think that the argument against L6 falls into the same trap as the
must get a tube amp argument. I had a L6 Guitar Port and it had some
nice sounds. I didn't like being tethered to the computer so I
eventually sold it. The point being that a beginner isn't going to be
able to distinguish the nuances of the better equipment with his
current level of skills. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend L6 based on
the sounds I got from the GP.
I would recommend getting a 12" speaker over a 10 or 8. The smaller
speakers I've dealt with on my Laney LC15 and Fender Pro Jr sound
"honky" compared with the 12"ers on my Peavey Bandit and Epi Valve Jr
w/1x12. To get a jumpstart on some cheap FX I'm happy with the Korg
AX3G for $50. Or add $20 and get the same unit with expression pedal.
Personally, I think a great setup is a Epi Valve Jr head, 1x12 cab,
and a FX pedal like the Korg. You won't be able to entertain the
neighborhood but it's loud enough for the family to tell you to turn
it down. You could get the whole setup for just about $330.
