Re: Marshall AVT112X speaker cab - what speaker?

Anyone know what Celestion is loaded in the Marshall AVT112X cab? It's a 100w 12" Celestion but I can't find any more details. I'm after a 1 x 12 for a Valve Junior Head - the Marshall AVT112X and the Laney GS112VE are both about the same price as the VJ Head in the UK. The Laney uses a Celestion Seventy 80 but details on the Marshall are slim. I'd probably replace the speaker with a G12H anyway, lower wattage at 30w, more suiting to the VJ. But I'd like to know what speaker is in the AVT 1 x 12.

I can't tell you which speaker came in that cab. But I wouldn't be too concerned about needing a low power speaker. Any wattage speaker will work, as long as your amp doesn't exceed the rating. The VJ is only 5W, so it's not going to get G12H, or even a greenback, to get any real speaker distortion.

One common misconception is that the 5W amp will sound quieter on a 60W speaker like the Vintage 30, compared to a 25W speaker like a Greenback. The loudness of the speaker at 5W is not determined by the power rating. It is determined by sensitivity rated in dB. In the two speakers mentioned, the 60W Vintage 30 will be louder than the 25W Greenback. ...because the Vintage 30 has a higher sensitivity rating.

I'd go with what sounds good to you, not forgetting about sensitivity. If you want earlier breakup, favor low sensitivity. If you want clean headroom, favor high. Having said that, I like how it sounds with a 2x12 Vintage 30, even if it is louder when it does break up. Use your ears for total package. (Note: mine is modified. I might want a bright sounding speaker if mine was stock.)
