for those of you who are not familiar with old vox amps,
A: Don't listen to a "tech" that uses the term "silicone rectifier",
or says "you must replace ALL the tubes".
"silicone rectifier" is the exact and proper name for
rectifiers used by vox to build these amps.
this is the name used in the vox factory service manual.
these were the components used before introduction of
modern diodes.
they can be replaced by modern diodes. you may find
that these components display high reverse leakage
and frequently short when they are aged, causing large
60 cycle hum; just as described here.
of course those of you not familiar would not realize
this, so i have taught you something about old vox amps.
whether you are too smug to pull your head out of your
ass and learn something from a person with more experience
is of course up to you.
again, replace ALL the tubes. goofing around trying to make
relic tubes work properly is generally a waste of your time.
start with fresh tubes and get the amp all working proper.
then if you insist, you could go back and try the old tubes one
at a time to see if any will work.
but generally old tubes mean problems, and don't belong in
reliable amplifiers.
tubes this old will usually make you pull your hair out; and
one other word of wisdom, tube testers don't work worth a damn
when it comes to guitar amp tubes. the best approach is to test
the tubes IN the amp itself, under actual playing conditions.
since i used to run an authorized vox service center, i thought
i might offer a little advice. (that's original vox, before smart
ass was born).
some of you, who know everything there is to know already
don't need to read this advice, you're too smart.
