Ok, I have a 1966 Vox Cambridge Reverb all tube amp and it hums
terribly after warming up and gets worse when i plug the guitar cable
in. It has the original 2 prong AC plug, in fact, everything is
original. With the volume low (10 oclock), the hum is annoying, but
tolerable. Any higher, and the hum is LOUD. Also, I noticed that a
lot of times I hear a "click" sound when simply touching the string on
the fretboard, not even fretting it.
Could the tubes be replaced and cure this? I found this site but have
no clue which of the EL84's listed would be the proper ones:

Or, I've read the the cap filters may need to be replaced. Is this a
solder job? Something I could do myself? I am not electronically
literate but handy at doing things myself with good instructions to
follow.
I called a local shop and they said anywhere from $45 to $100 for
this, not including putting a 3-prong grounded plug on it...I forgot
to mention that when I called. Since I don't know these people at all
(found their # in the phonebook), I'd like to try to do some or all of
these things myself if possible. My philosophy has always been "I can
screw it up just as well as anybody....for a lot less". Maybe there
are other causes for these noises???
If anyone has a link to a schematic, that would also be handy.
Any help is much appreciated. Marty
Take it to a tech who knows how to repair old amps.
Even if you have to ship it to someone you will be
better off than if some hack-butcher gets ahold of it.
If you have to spend a few bucks getting it in shape it
will be money well spent. Those are nice little amps
and are appreciating in value. It probably would be
better to learn amp maintenance on one that is less
valuable, although the circuit in the CR is not *too*
complex for a beginner.
There's lots of competent ( and a few less so ) techs
who post here in AGA and it wouldn't be a surprise if
someone was close to you...
Good Luck
