I am considering building a reverb unit but I am also thinking of
simply adding a reverb circuit into my current amp.

I've used 2204s for over 30 years now so I am not familiar with how I
could add this kind of mod into my amp. I would like to add it in
such a way that it can be completely bypassed and isolated with a
switch.

At what point in the 2204 circuit is the best place to re-route the
signal into the reverb and then back to the 2204? I was thinking
after the tone stack / before PI but I dont know if there are problems
with that or not.

I want some tone control in the reverb circuit as well, for extra
crispy or original reverb. Not even sure that kind of statement
applies.

Any schematics would be appreciated for reference.

Honest, I'm not being a smart ass. Mostly. It'd be a lot easier to add an
effects loop and get a pedal or rack gadget.

You are not sounding like a smart ass I asked for opinions so I
understand it that way.

I've played with a rack gadget, yamaha xps 90, and a yamaha g50 - errr
something like that. Both of those had similar settings for the delay
and reverb. I had them in a midi loop switch RP93 by Rolls and then
also as a direct in loop with my guitar and neither sounded
realistic. They tend to compress the guitar too much and then it
sounds tin-ie. I get distortion of the signal when its in direct path
and loss of signal when its in a loop.

I used to have a Sears Silvertone 150 SS with a spring in it, many
many years ago but the spring was degraded and the pots sucked. I do
remember some cool space sounds I could make with it.

What I want to try is to get some of that Fender reverb sound in my
2204. I like my tone the way it is but it would be nice to have some
reverb that actually worked properly. Just a little reverb at loud
conditions. So I could do a decent repro of SRV Lenny, or the Little
Wing sound, Tin Pan Alley, and then have the distortion for Voodoo
Child (slight return).

I hope that dials the idea a little better.

Check Doug Hoffman's site, I recall a few years ago he had a reverb add-in to go
with his Marshall-ish turret board designs. Hold on a sec....

Here ya go:http://hoffmanamps.com/charts/reverbmod.htm

Not a drop in, but probably enough for a clever fellow to go from there. Myself,
since it'd take adding a tube anyway, I'd use a 12DW7, use the low gain side to
power the tranny and the high gain half for recovery.

BTW, Doug is a real good guy, a heck of a builder back when he did that and a
purveyor of prime parts.

Thanks Ron. I looked at the Hoffman reverb mod for a while and I
don't understand a few things. I can read the schematic and
understand the connections but I don't understand the reverb as an
effect I guess.

How does a tube reverb unit work? Isn't it just some sort of feedback
loop so the signal gets repeated continously? I can visualize the
signal being repeated so that it lags behind the original signal while
degrading in amplitude in each new cycle. This would provide the
apparent tank effect when you listen to it. Then the mix pot provides
more or less input signal while the dwell controls the wet/repeated
signal e.g. how much repeat oscillation in the tube. So what does the
transformer do in this circuit? and how does the output from the
reverb go back into the output of the amp?

I looked at Webers Add a Verb circuit but it is a stand alone reverb
unit so it looks more like an amplifier, I can see the input and
follow it to the output, four transformers for it...wow.

I'll study some more circuits and see if I can figure it out.

The Hoffman mod makes use of an amp that looks a lot like a 2204 so I
may end up doing this but I want to fully understand what is happening
first.

Once again thanks for the schematic and the help.
