I'd try a 12AU7 in the first gain hole and leave the rest as is. If you
wanted to keep the gain and emphasize lower mids, I'd be talking (real)
Mullard ECC83. But since you already have too much gain, try a 12AU7.

What speaker is in it right now?
Laney's "HH Premier - Vintage 60". I thought it was a cheap Celestion
made for Laney, but they say it's their own speaker. I tried a Mesa
BlackShadow 90. It was real nice, but too bright for my amp. My amp
doesn't have heaps of bass.
I was told to get a Weber Alnico, but there are soooo many Webers. I
looked at the Celestion website and the sound samples are hard to tell
which I'd like. I play hard rock and mellow stuff too. I also plug my
acoustic into it.
I resorted to using a Rat pedal on the clean channel until I solve the
harsh mids issue.
