Exactly, and if you like Tullamore Dew ("Every man deserves his Dew") you'll love POWERS... give it a try. Neat, in a glass...
I think I may have tried that.
The CHEAPEST 100% agave tequila (white) is 100 times better than Cuervo Gold... also interesting, how there was a *convenient* bad crop of the agave plant that sent the price of tequila WAY up...
There were reports in Mexican newspapers (being able to read
some Spanish is soooo informative) that mass-market tequila
distilleries (read:Cuervo) were importing bootleg mezcal plants
from other states in order to distill enough tequila. Needless
to say, it's not NOM or 100% agave from Jalisco if they do that.
Now that the crop has recovered..??????
The problem (and this goes for pulque as well),is it takes
about 9 years for the mezcal plant to mature. Finding
places to plant the damn things is no problem, they'll
grow, even wild, on hillsides as steep as 60 degrees.
Not surprisingly, aguardiente, caña, and charanda,
which are basically cheap rums made from an annual plant
(sugarcane), are cheap and plentiful. Maybe $3 a liter.
Cheap buzz, huh? Makes good Cuba Libres.
Should the prices come down..??? Me thinks not... :-|
There's still places in Mexico where you can get good, cheap,
homemade mezcal. Last time I was in Guerrero, a 2 liter plastic
jug of the stuff was about $10. Officially labeled and sealed
bottles are about $10. Not easy for casual tourists to find
and a good excuse to learn Spanish ;-) You do want *friends*
to help you find it.
Through some stroke of *luck* I went on a 'collecting spree' some years ago, and have a rather large collection of fine tequila... pre-agave problem and price increase.
I think I may have your address on file. But, if you see
a bunch of odd characters.. you know, guys wearing shades
and cruising around in polished Escalades with wire wheels,
I promise they're not casing your home.
FWIW, once given a real chance, Irish Whiskeys are found to be noticably smoother, richer, and dare I say "drinkable" than most other whiskeys... American whiskeys are good for *mixing*...(!!!)
I'd never think of mixing Irish. But there's some good
bourbon I wouldn't mix, either.
