Thank you for the reply - first of all, I am not at all well-versed in
electronics, I am just a brave fool willing to experiement on my own
expensive equipment. I would love to be able to play with the bias and
hear different sounds at different settings - (guess I need a longer
speaker cable).
The problem is I really do not know the acceptable range. Where did you
get the figure ~117% of spec'd plate dissipation? 1.375v is what
Marshall specifies for these tubes and that is where I set them.
I do know this - when I first looked at the bias (where it was set when
I got the amp, used, built in '99) - the bias was down around 1.15. I
think overall it sounded better (more Marshall-like) back then. The
sound I have now is really good, but it isn't what I am really looking
for.
Bottom line - what is the acceptable range for biasing these tubes? JJ
EL84s.
