Re: Good SRV/SANTANA Tube Amp under $500?

Interesting that you don't want a combo, since they both used combos. SRV liked Fender Vibroverb's

Much of his tone is Super Reverb. He used both amps at the same time, but distortion was mainly SUPER REVERB.

and Carlos got famous using a Mesa Boogie Mark I.

If you are totally against combos, I would recommend looking for a used Mesa Boogie head, maybe a DC-3 or some other member of the Dual Caliber line. Also, a used F-30 might come into that price range.

I'd say Mesa Mark III, or Silver Face Super Reverb (45W version ONLY), if he can scrap up another $2-300. The Mark III comes head or combo. Insist on optional EQ (unless you plan to provide your own in the effects loop), and the Reverb is nice to have. Without mods, the Super Reverb needs to be played quite LOUD before it hits its stride. But either of these amps is well worth the extra money!!!

Don't expect to get a head and a cab for that price though - not anything of quality anyway.

He needs to be realistic on what five bills will buy. If he's set on $500 for head and speaker, he may be looking for quite a while. I've gotten deals that would fall in that range, but they are few and far between. If that's his goal, he'd better check local craigslist once and hour for who knows how long, and he'd better know how to do his own maintenance on the amp. That's how I got both my Mesa Mark III and my latest Univox 4x6L6GC monster. The Univox head was cheap, but only because previous owner did BONEHEAD mods on it, killing the tone. But I saw the potential, and I brought it back to life. My Mark III was cheap because it wouldn't play above a whisper. But I fixed it myself.

Hi,

I am starting to do research on buying a good tube amp. I have a ross
compressor and a couple of tubescreamers. I am looking for a good tube
amp (not a combo) that is under $500 and nails that rock bluesy grit.
Kinda simalar to SRV or Santana tone. Any suggestions would be
appericated.
