Re: Tweed Bassman - Should I buy it? Help appreciated!

The Lancer's not mine, but I agree it's a cool amp!

I hadn't figured on a water damaged amp. The tech who has it told me it
looked like it was stored in a humid laundry room and had not fired it up
yet (It was in his shop for sale or repair). I suppose it could have been in
the flood, though I can't tell. I'll have him take a good look for water
damage, rotted wood, excessive rust or anything else that might indicate a
floater...

As a side note, I've only gotten into amp collection/restoration in the last
couple of years, but have restored and traded enough amps that I haven't yet
lost money on a sale or traded for something cooler. I've always thought it
would be cool to have a real tweed Bassman. I've been lucky enough to have
scored a wide panel Deluxe, wide panel Twin, and a BFDR. I figured a Bassman
would be out of reach for several years, and that I would have to settle for
new speakers (I'm a sucker for old Chicago Jensens) and ratty tolex. This
thing (The Bassman we're talking about) would indeed be a large project. I'm
not worried about the circuit work - I can do that well enough. The tweed,
well, I don't mind letting it hang there for now. I figure if I like the amp
enough to keep it I'd find someone good at doing Tweed (Nashville or
Atlanta, maybe) and enjoy... If I decide not to restore, well, I don't think
I'd have much trouble getting my money back if I don't go much farther than
$3000. All this assumes it wasn't reeled in by a fisherman on Lake Charles,
that is.

Regards,

Justin

What's the scoop on that Lancer in the picture? Compared to the Bassman, it
really looks hot. (I realize it's a totally different amp.)

You're gonna end up putting a lot into the Bassman. Are you prepared to do
what it takes? IMO, there's no going halfway.
