Mr. Rich Koerner ... you have my respect and undivided attention sir.
I thoroughly appreciate and understand your comments...thank you.
True I am only just learning the science as I go and do find the
learning to be exponential givin the hands on trial and experiment sort
of like reverse engineering...without the engineering applied
specifically to the narrow focus of the circuits at hand.
Every turn in this adventure has a new light turning on... and I am
being careful that I am not acting as the filament.
Despite appearances I have So far not attempted anything out of my
depth of understanding (be it from the top down).
My unorthodox method of "just do it" has in the past led me to build
several high end guitars, world class sculpture, proficiency on
several musical instruments with a naturalness that extends beyond
boundaries and translates to other endeavors such as recording
engineering and computer science equally well. Any of the several
specialized trades I've been proficient in (all true) have all been
accomplished without direct prior knowledge to soon arrive at
leadership roles with a level of competence comparable to people 20
years experience. Rich, being both technical inclined and creative in
your own right, I'm sure you can relate.
Note that 2 years ago I barely understood how to turn a computer on and
so posed a few explorative questions to my brother (who is in fact a
bonified computer scientist) who is much to involved with his work to
have to take the time to lead me by the hand (along with eveybody else
and their dog who calls him with a computer problem. I refuse to
trouble him and just went on to figure it out for myself with no
further inquiry.
I can now fly completly on my own with computer graphics, web design,
multitrack audio and trouble shooting and maintaining several computers
and hundreds of programs sucessfully.
Not that I can leap tall buildings and outrun trains or have an
outlandish sense of ego but I've designed and built them both and lived
to tell the tale.
All advice and inquires through this and other Internet sources are
invaluable to me as entertainment and learning and In the end it is up
to me to decide what if any of the information is relevant or valid to
my pursuit.
No doubt If the interest progresses beyond my present "curiosity" a
deep yearning for understanding all the intimate details will lead me
along the path recommended.
Foremost I appreciate the wisdom of people like you Rich.
Sorry for giving you a pain.
You do have my respect.
Savy
Savy, I appreciate you taking the time to post your detailed comments.
I wish I had not given away most all my electronics school books.
Two of which I still have are Basics Mathematics For Electronics by Nelson Cooke, and Calculus For
Electronics by Richmond.
LOL, I should pull out my old slip stick for laughs. All the hours of slippin and flippin on that
thing I spent getting through school. I had a high tech one for the times. I should take a picture
of it and put it up on my web site.
Wait,..... LOL.....
Yeah, I think it's the one on the top of the picture.

Surf through this place. I think it's a real kick.

Then, maybe look over this
http://www.chemicalprocessing.com/articles/2006/032.html
Scroll to the bottom text and hit the links.
Imagine that. Vintage slipsticks.
I saw there was an electronics slipstick made that I never knew existed.
That would be cool to have.
Anyway, enough for my flashback.
As you can see from my math books, so was the level of the electronics books.
There was a series of books I had to go through that was published by McGraw Hill that was used in
my first year. After that, the books were more of an engineering level specific to the different
electronic fields. Radio communications, aviation, audio, etc....
The older books on vacuum tube electronics are not out of date for what is before you today. You
can find them on the internet, books stores, and libraries.
One good high school and college level book is all you need on the basics of vacuum tube
electronics.
A good electronics math book would be a good thing to have too.
Good luck in your learning.

I'm forever glad that I kept two of my basic books from
my 70s formal schooling in electronics. Of course by then
we had calculators with log functions (expensive ones).
And I'd begun tinkering with electronics in the 60s.
But my old text books have proved invaluable time and
again:
ESSENTIALS OF MATHEMATICS Fourth Edition: Russell V. Pearson
Goes all the way from fractions, decimals and scientific
notation through trig. and does it all logically and well.
FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRONICS: Charles M. Thomson
A good solid book that starts with basic theory of matter,
and goes all the way to all manner of phase relationships.
Perhaps not the best all around book in the later chapters,
but pretty solid most of the way through.
Funny thing books. Those nearly 30 year old math and electronics
books are still useful, yet my computer books from 3-5 years ago
are as out-dated as the computers of that many years back. I have
boxes of 5-10 year old computer and networking books that are
useless.
