I know that using a different clipping diode would change your sound,
but I don't see how that one would.

Does it sound thinner when using the battery, or is this with the
wallwart plugged in now?  Because batteries do have a much more
pleasant sound than any wallwarts that I've tried.

I use my multi voltage wallwart to power my caller ID now, and it
sounds great doing that!  (and has adequate filtration for that job
too)
