First - My "Holy Grail" Bassman story:
I was in a rehearsal room of a band I was working with when
I was a teenager. I had been playing guitar for only a year
or so. Between sessions I was hanging around with my
friend the guitar player and in the process of checking out
his guitar I plugged into the bass amp - an early '60s blond
Bassman (w/presence control) with the 2x12 cab.
The amp was sitting with the cab on it's side, the speakers
being oriented vertically one above the other.
The amp would have only been a few years old at the time.
It was one of those "WOW" epiphany moments.
How can a guitar sound so good through a bass amp ? ?
The louder I turned it the better it sounded. This was "back
in the day" before a Bassman was considered suitable as
a guitar amp, at least in the circles I was in at the time.
I'm not sure what brand speakers would have been in there.
Probably not the Fender/Utahs that I have grown to like,
more likely they would have been the Oxford or Jensens
common to the earlier Fenders.
It's one of those sounds that I have been seeking to emulate
ever since. I've been through numerous 2x12 cabinets over the
years since then. I still prefer the vertical speaker arrangement.
So my recommendation for you is of course a 2x12 sealed cab
of the size of the smaller original Bassman, not the later '60s
large box 212 (post CBS).
The Avatar cabs are about the correct size for what I describe.
good luck
