Hi. I`m thinking of swopping my JMP-1 for a JCM800 head. Can anyone tell me there experiences of above head?
Eddie
The JMP-1 would get a greater range of gains and tones, but if it is a 2204 (50W) or 2203 (100W) with vertically mounted inputs, I'd have to say DO THE TRADE. I am biased, because I own a JMP 2204. I would not do the swap for a channel switching JCM800.
What power amp are you using, and what are your opinions of your current setup? The JCM800 2203 and 2204 are an all tube path in the preamp. Other models, and your preamp (I believe) use diodes for distortion tone. The 2204/2203 is not as high of a gain as some of your options, but it sounds better to me.
Have you had the opportunity to try it? What do YOU think? Does it have EL34 outputs? Try it cranked.
Start with a model. There are many. I have the 4104 (not a head, a 2x12 combo), but it's the 2204 circuit, with no reverb/channel switching. Mine also has been biased for EL34 tubes. You can google JCM 800 and probably get enough reading to keep you busy for a week!
