Also, get a docking station or "port extender". They are cheap and

Most laptops don't need a docking station to attach a full-size
keyboard, external monitor or mouse.
Of course, but being able to pop the laptop in and out without fooling
with cables is something one can get used to. It also means that all
the little bits can stay in the bag. The jacks take abuse when they
are used daily, especially the mic jack.
There are 6 cables, ethernet, speakers, mouse, kbd, video. and power.
Any one of these connecteors can go bad if used daily.
I don't remove my connectors and peripherals daily but even if I did,
I think the cost to replace them with USB equivalent devices could go
on for more than a decade before justifying the cost of a docking
station. In real life I don't remember incurring any replacement costs
from infrequent disconnections/reconnections of cables and jacks. BTW,
couldn't the docking station connector also go bad from being
disconnected/reconnected daily?
I managed a fleet of hundreds of business-grade laptops used by people
that worked in the office and and at home. We recommended docking
stations, one at each location, partially because we saw bad ports for
those that didn't use docks.
What I called a "port extender" is really called "port replicator" and
they are cheap, like $60. Given that a dead connector on an
out-warranty laptop means it's impossible to fix for less than a new
machine.
A dock comes with a second power brick which means you can leave the
first one in the bag and you have a backup when you leave it at the
office.
I'll add another cable, the securty cord. That makes 7. A dock that
has a security cable attached to it locks up the laptop when it is
docked.
